Hi, The FindmyPast recent release of information on Royal Navy and Marine Pensions gave me a little more information on a relative who was behind a brick wall. It has however, left me wanting more. I found out that Sam/uel Loxton Shepton Mallet, Somerset born 1764-66 received a lifetime pension of 7 pound a year in 1798, after 1 year and 5 months; but no ship mentioned or reason for retirement. Is there a way I can search more information on this and maybe his address, next-of- kin etc? Also I am in Australia so it will have to be an online search.
Thanks for your time.

If you look at document ADM 6/271, he seems to have lost a leg. Ditto'ed from the person above. So at least there's a reason for his discharge / retirement.

added
ADM 73/66 gives more detail. He was 53 in 1815, he lost his right leg, he was wounded on a ship called Pomone, which was also the last ship he served in. His wife's name was Elizabeth and his birth parish was Wells, Somerset.

Freereg has a burial of a Samual Loxton in Shepton Mallett on 4 May 1848 age 84, would this be your Samuel? Abode was Garston Street. Mary Loxton also of garston Street was buried on 19 April 1843 age 72.

In 1841, this Samuel is living in Garston Street, SM with a Mary Loxton, she is recorded as 5 years younger. Samuel's occupation is "Navy P", so looks like the right man, unless two Navy Pensioners of similar age in that part of Somerset.

There is a marriage for Samuel Lockwood wid and Mary Miles wid in SM on 18 Feb 1833. Wit Pheobe Green and David Gaite. Both otp.

Wikipedia has this article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_frigate_Pomone_(1787)
The Pomone was a French vessel that was captured by the Royal Navy and used by them for a few years. She was in RN service in 1798 when Samuel was pensioned off.

Dear LizzieL, Thank you so much for your help. Yes I believe the Garston Street Samuel is in our tree, he may be our convict Cornelius' father; I am now a step closer to proving it. When the FindmyPast documents came up I was not able to view them all for some reason and did not realise how much was on the ones that would not come up. Today I managed to see them.
Thanks again

the Cornelius Loxton bapt in 1808 in SM has parents Samuel and Elizabeth, which fits with samuel's wife in the 1815 navy records. The Samuel and Mary who died in between 1841 and 1851 censuses were in the same street as Naval pensioner Samuel and Mary (likely his wife) so that all fits  as the same couple. The marriage I found looks a strong possibility, if we can find Samuel's first wife Elizabeth's burial between 1815 and 1833 when a Samuel married Mary.

added
baptism for Nehemia Loxton on 26 may 1804  at SM (born 22 Mar 1804) s/o Samuel and Elizabeth
and James bapt 3 May 1806, born 13 Feb 1806 at SM also parents Samuel and Elizabeth.

This was on Freereg. If you do search with Soundex on surname for Shepton mallett records, it picks up loxtone, Lockston, Lockstone etc. Some may not be related, but the names nehemiah and Cornelius occur in earlier generations. may be worth looking at

Dear LizzieL, Thank you for your suggestions. I did know about Nehemia etc (details on a previous post Nov 2015). There is a death for a Betty Loxton in Dec 1828 aged 50 abode Kilver Street. Nehemiah died 26 Jul 1828 aged 25, abode Kilver Street. However, Samuel (Died Apr 1848) and Mary (Died Apr 1843) lived in Garston Street and a Martha Loxton aged 17 died Nov 1826 abode Garston Street. She was Cornelius and Nehemia's sister, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth. I just need to work out the right Samuel and find who Elizabeth/Betty is. The answer is here somewhere but I just need suggestions to get me there.
Thanks for your time

If you click on Somerset in the County option box, it should give you a list of parishes in the Place box, in alphabetical order, which can either refine your search with, or leave open.

Hi Maddys52, Thanks for the suggestion. It turned out that it was the server I had recently started using, so I changed back to my old one and all is fine.
Thank-you for your time.
