Copy of marriage licence
« on: Wednesday 13 April 16 13:25 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was married at St. Pancras Register Office in 1909, I have the certificate from GRO, however, how do I obtain a copy of the licence?
Thank you

If you have the marriage certificate, then i'm pretty sure that is all that is available

So far as i am aware, copies of Registrar's Licences / Certificates ( the equivalent of Church Licences / Banns) are not available

If he had been married in Church by Licence, then a copy would most likely be found at the Record Office

For a Church wedding the actual licence was issued to the bridegroom who presented it to the priest conducting the marriage. The licence could then have been kept by the priest, or returned to the diocesan registries, or given to the couple on their wedding day and kept within the family, but usually does not survive. I assume the same happened with a registrars licence, apart from being  returned to the diocesan registries.
You can see an example of a Superintendant Registrar's Marriage Licence, 1872, at http://anguline.co.uk/cert/mar_lic.html

For older marriages by diocesan or archidiaconal licence, the allegation and/or bond often survive, in the relevant County Record Office (which need not be the county of the place of marriage, since dioceses and archdeaneries were not all neatly aligned with administrative counties).

I do not know when this series of records comes to an end and whether it continued past 1909 ... perhaps somebody else can advise.

My own marriage licence (a Special Licence from the Archbishop of Canterbury) is framed, and hangs on the wall in my hall.

I think the clue may be in the opening post: the marriage took place at the register office and has most probably been lost, sadly, in the passage of time.
