Birth certificate which one?

I want o buy a birth certificate of one of my ancestors, there are two possible, I definitely think that one of them is the one I need, but which one. Their names match the registration area match, one is 4q 1895 the other is 2q 1896. Is there any way I can decide which one to buy,? at nearly £10 each I don't want to buy the wrong one, or is that the only way? Thanks Ruchca

If you think that you know the name of either parent, then you can specify this when ordering.  If the name doesn't match, then GRO will not send the certificate, and will refund your money.

Have you tried finding a baptism for the child, this might give you the parents names and you can then find this information on the census. By using the baptism and census information you might get a clearer idea which one was born in the correct year.

If you want to go down this route you must tick the box 'reference not known' when you make your online order.

If you use the GRO reference you don't get the option to specify parents names.
