Brough Fletcher
« on: Thursday 14 April 16 11:15 BST (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with any information on the following?

I have a Brough Fletcher born 1893, Mealsgate, Cumberland, died 1972, Bristol, possibly being in the Army in WW1?

Brough is listed as being left effects of his brother Wiggin Beaty Fletcher, 7940, Private Coldstream Guards, killed in action 4th March 1917.

The only other information I can find from this record is that Brough was a Gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery, number 174116?

If this is the same Brough, he and his brother Wiggin were the children of Irving and Grace Fletcher of Shildon, Durham.

Brough later became a footballer and football Manager.

Any help very much appreciated! :)

From FreeBMD:

Deaths, June qtr 1972
Bristol Registration District     vol 7b, page 54

Fletcher, Brough     Date of Birth: 9th March 1894

There is only 1 birth that I can see:
June qtr 1893
Wigton District     vol 10b, page 586

Fletcher, Brough

The 1901 census (Class: RG13; Piece: 4647; Folio: 123; Page: 43) shows the family.
Irvin & Grace Fletcher, with 7 children including Wiggen B (12) and Brough (8.).

Six-digit numbers were issued to units which had been pre war part-timers in March 1917. I can only find his medal card. This shows he served overseas. The National Archives gives the correct first name. Ancestry have him as Brongh. It is a basic card saying he earned the two standard end of WW1 medals - the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Someone on the Great War Forum may know which unit he served with from the 174116 number. You can then download the war diary from the National Archives.

That may be the limit of the information you can find. As it looks like his record was destroyed in a fire in 1940.

Just found an old football programme , Bristol Rovers v Swindon Town, March 5th 1949 with Brough Fletcher named as Bristol Rovers manager.

There's nothing wrong with being mediocre...as long as you're good at it!
