missing death certificate
« on: Friday 15 April 16 17:26 BST (UK) »
I have my ancestor's date and place of death from both the calendar of wills and a death notice in the Morning News newspaper. He died in Belfast in 1884, but the GRO in Belfast tells me they can find no death certificate for him. I requested searches under both Blaney and Blayney. Would anyone know why there would be no death certificate? If the executor was granted probate then surely they must have had to have a death certificate. Any ideas?

An idea would be to say who you are looking for.
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

well the question was about the practice of recording deaths - maybe I put it in the wrong part of the forum?

I have very reliable information about his death, and he died at a time when deaths were registered, so it is strange that no death certificate is recorded.....

You've actually posted in Antrim Completed Look up Requests instead of the main ANTRIM board.

I'm not sure that a death certificate would have been required in 1884 but it's entirely likely that the death was registered wrongly or left out of the index. In this case note that the probate wasn't granted until 1 Mar.1886.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Sorry Aghadowey.

As we don't have a name that might/might not be the one! Nearest I could find!

I realise what you posted was only a possibility based on what was previously posted, hallmark, but just wanted to point out that the date of death and probate were several years apart which makes it more likely the date of death could be inaccurate.
