Marriage of Thomas Andrews 1786-1861 and Mary Cartwright 1793-1862
« on: Sunday 17 April 16 13:37 BST (UK) »
Thomas Andrews 1786-1861 was the son of Joseph Andrews 1759-1836 and Mary Terry 1761-1839.  Thomas, like his father was a shoemaker, and is described as such at the baptisms of his children.  In the 1841 census he was living at the Sunday School House, Alvechurch and described as a School Teacher.  In 1851 and 1861 he is described as the Parish Clerk.

Mary Cartwright was born about 1793.  Where, I do not know.

The mother of Mary Cartwright was also Mary.  In 1841 she was living alone in Rowney Green, Alvechurch, born out of county, with her age given as 80, although she was born about 1857.  She died on 12 May 1843, and was buried at St Laurence Church, Alvechurch on 16 May 1843 (Source: Parish Register: Abode-Alvechurch, Age-86).  The sole executor of her will was Thomas Andrews (Source: Will of Mary Cartwright proved 12 Aug 1843).

I have searched for a marriage of Thomas Andrews to Mary Cartwright without success.  The Worcestershire Marriage Index, held at The Hive, Worcester does not have a marriage for this couple.  Family Search does not have a record for them.  It is possible that as Mary's mother was born out of county Mary may have been married at the home parish of her mother.

I would be grateful if anyone has any idea how I may move forward to find a marriage for Thomas and Mary.

Thanks,

ScobieDrom.

Was Thomas Andrew described as Mary Cartwright's son in law in the will?  If not could she simply have chosen him because he was parish clerk?

Thank you for your response.  Thomas Andrews was described as the Son in Law of Mary Cartwright 1757-1843 in her will.

Don't know if this has any relevance;  Mary Cartwright, born 1792 in Welshampton, Shropshire to John Cartwright and Mary.

Were there two Thomas Andrews?

The Worcester Journal 12 June 1845 carries a report of an inquest into the death of Thos. Andrews a yeoman aged 59 of Rowney Green Nr Alvechurch who died at Hanbury after being kicked in the ribs by his horse, which he had been beating.

The age ties in with the birth of 'your' Thomas, and Rowney Green is where Mary Snr was living in 1841.   ???

Jomot,

Thanks for looking into this for me.

The report in the Worcester Journal of 12 June 1845 for the inquest of Thomas Andrews, which was held at the Square & Compasses, Hanbury is incorrect.  The person who died after being kicked by a horse was Edward Andrews 1785-1845.  The incident was correctly reported in the Hereford Journal of 11 June 1845.  Edward died on 4 June and the inquest was held on 5 June 1845.  No coroners papers survive.  Edward was buried at St Laurence Church, Alvechurch on 8 June 1845 (Source: Parish Register. Abode: Alvechurch, Age: 60).

Edward Andrews 1785-1845 was a first cousin of Thomas Andrews 1786-1861, their fathers being brothers.

Thanks again for looking into this for me.

Hello,

Is it possible that Mary who married Thomas Andrews does not have the surname Cartwright?
Maybe her mother had remarried after her daughter's birth.
If Mary were illegitimate (perhaps unlikely given her dob compared with her mother's dob), then that could be another reason for a different surname to Cartwright.

Do any of the children's names (eg middle names) have a name which might be their mother's surname?

Geographically, Warwickshire might be worth checking if they are not in Worcs.

Hello Lisa,

Thank you for taking the time to look into this for me and thanks for your response.

I agree it may well be worth looking in Warwickshire for the marriage.

Thomas and Mary had ten children at regular two to three year intervals from the first, Jane baptised 27 Dec 1812 St Laurence, Alvechurch to Emily the last, baptised 24 Jul 1836.  All children were baptised at St Laurence, Alvechurch.  It seems Thomas Andrews 1786-1861 and Mary Cartwright 1793-1862 went on to become an important part of the church community as they lived in the Sunday School House in 1841, The National School in 1851 and Church Cottage in 1861.  Thomas was a teacher at the Sunday School as well as being the Parish Clerk.

The prime evidence for the surname of Mary Cartwright 1793-1862 comes from three of her children who emigrated to Australia.  The whole family were literate and corresponded with each other.  Australian marriage and death records require the maiden name of the mother of the subject of the record.  John Andrews 1824-1885 was the sixth child of Thomas and Mary.  He died in Tenterfield, New South Wales and his death record gives his mother as Mary Cartwright.  Ann Andrews 1830-1912 declares her mother as Mary Cartwright on her marriage to James Glasgow at Tenterfield on 3 Nov 1864.  Similarly when Henry Andrews 1833-1902 married Mary Whitaker on 4 Jan 1865 at Tenterfield he said his mother was Mary Cartwright.  The will of Mary (?) Cartwright 1757-1843 when making Thomas Andrews, described as Son in Law, the executor of her will confirms the relationship.

All of the children have a single Christian name with no clue as to their mother's surname.

Again many thanks for looking at this for me and taking the time to reply.  It is greatly appreciated.
