Bourne T.I.C. (or T.I.O.) 1934
« on: Tuesday 19 April 16 14:58 BST (UK) »
I have a photo of my grandfather when he was working either on a farm in the Bourne area or when he was at agricultural college in the area in 1934. On the back it says, "January 1934. Bourne T.I.C. Taken while working in the grounds" - the C could be an unclosed O so it could be T.I.O. No one in the family knows what this is and searching the internet doesn't help locate the place so I wondered if anyone here had any idea what or where Bourne T.I.C (or T.I.O.) was.

Thanks in advance.

The last letter looks like a C to me.

Wonder if it is C for College as you say he was at agricultural college ....

Rex Needle probably knows more than anybody about Bourne.

It might be worth contacting him - http://homepages.which.net/~rex/bourne/

Thank you both.

I think it is most likely is a C and it's T.I.College.
I'll take a look at the Bourne website and get in touch with the owner.

It could be that this is just some shorthand that my grandad used that means nothing to anyone else, but it would be nice to know where he worked back then.

The 1931 map shows a large ministry of labour training centre just outside Bourne, labelled as Bourne Camp.

It looks like T.I.C. stood for Training Instructional Centre......there were several of them up and down the country in the 1930's, including the one at Bourne, they were initially for the unemployed, to train them, with a view to getting back into work......hope this helps.......Del.

The T.I.C. at Bourne was a residential centre, there were also summer camps at Kirkby Underwood, Pickworth Wood and other places in the vicinity.
