I received a letter from my sister saying that my brother W. H. Shepherd ...
M. Dillon
147 Devonshire st

Sands Directory 1919 has Mrs Maud Dillon. So far I've not found a marriage that fits.

No mention that I can see in William's service record that names the other sister.

1st Marriage NICHOLLS WILLIAM G - SHEPHERD VERA M  - SYDNEY * 5 Sep 1925

2nd Marriage JOHNSTON DAVID LESLIE - NICHOLS VERA - GLEBE * 24 Jul 1948

Death PEAK RUBY - HENRY  - HELENA -  BALMAIN NORTH * 15 Jun 1918

Ruby was 12 when she died in 1918. Buried at RC Rookwood.

Death PEAK EDWARD JOHN - EDWARD - UNKNOWN - CONCORD * 4 Feb 1947

That would be Edward John WOODBRIDGE.

Ruby and Vera look to be children of William & Helena. Seems to be no reg.

I've made no progress tracing Susan.

I wonder how accurate the 'born Narrabri' bit is. If correct then W. H. was not SHEPHERD (variations). If SHEPHERD then was he born in Newcastle?  Alexander & Susan. ??

A death for Maud DILLON?

Fred

1913 NSW Electoral Roll - NEWCASTLE - HUNTER STREET WEST
PEAK Helena, 82 Church-street West
[on her own]

Death 1926 - Notice in SMH
Susan Elizabeth SMALL
... mother of May Matthews, Mrs Drummond, George and Percy Hillier. ...

A number of members served in the AIF under false names for a variety of reasons. The tables below identify such persons .

W. H. not on the list of known aliases.

Narrabri Old
Peak Henry Isaac
Birth:   Sep 1890
Death: 11 Mar 1891
Jacob & Margaret

Can't find a notice in Trove for 1902 death of Frederick Hellier.

No DRUMMOND - DILLON marriage 1919 - 1926 so Mrs Drummond is not Maud.

DRUMMOND - HELLIER ? or  DRUMMOND - SHEPHERD ?

1st Marriage NICHOLLS WILLIAM G - SHEPHERD VERA M  - SYDNEY * 5 Sep 1925

2nd Marriage JOHNSTON xxxxxxx  xxxxxx - NICHOLS VERA - GLEBE * 24 Jul 1948

From 1932 to 1980 Vera May JOHNSTON and the man whose name you mention in the marriage of NICOLLS to JOHNSTON are at the same address in Brisbane, QLD.

EDIT.
In the light of Fred giving the death of the husband, David (see below).  This information is incorrect so struck through.

Sue, the death is

Death JOHNSTON DAVID LESLIE - WILLIAM JOHN - ELEANOR  - BALMAIN * 18 Jul 1963

Death notices for Vera and David list the same children, one daughter with an uncommon name.

It would be a son with Vera.

The 1915 marriage might have what I need but I will wait and search some more.  I have several NSW marriages that have no age, no place of birth, no occupation, no father, no father's occupation and no mother, for both bride and groom.

Hi,

The NSW BDM marriages with blanks for those vital family history clues will be for marriages 1856 to   1895.    The info will already be on the 1915 record.   Please do consider obtaining the official transcription, it is a quality alternative, any of the three offer excellent work, it is cheaper than the real deal cert, they are appointed by NSW BDM, and the transcribers are familiar with the handwritten entries.   ;D

So those blanks are not brickwalls.

Here is a thread I did up that will help you overcome those elusive blanks.

Thanks JM,

I have read that previously.  Just pointing out that my $20 for a transcript might not solve the problem. There are several possible certificates in this and I can't get them all. I've had no success yet in any attempts to get info from various churches.

Somehow we have to connect Hillier, Small, Dillon, Shepherd, Drummond and Matthews.

And there should not be any blanks on the 1915 NSW marriage that Wivenhoe kindly noted.   It is here:

You need to see this marriage certificate, NSW -
9177/1915  SHEPHERD William H     m.      PEAK Helena   @   Sydney

By 1915, the longrunning dispute was over, (ten years over), the clergy were co-operating with NSW BDM, NSW BDM were reconciling the older Church registers to their own registers, and the NSW BDM clerks (males of course in that era) were about to join the AIF and those who were unfit for the overseas efforts were to find work in AIF Base records.

Cheers,  JM
