William Bauer, the "Laceman" in that 1861 census entry for 85 Oxford Street, also had a shop at 34 Commercial Street in Leeds in April 1851 according to his newspaper ads for his "British and Foreign Lace Establishment".  So that ties together those 1851 and 1861 census entries.

Oh, that's beautiful!

There was also a store in Scarborough up to 1850 ( 14 St Nicholas Street).

Thank you very much for that.

Edit; in 1856 he has a sale (supposedly) because of alteration to the premises at 85, Oxford St

(titles himself "W Bauer")

Edit2;  herewith from 1858; look at the prices and stock levels. Loadsa' money!

And this "lace" tale all fits nicely with her occupation in the linen department of a big department store in 1841; I'm happy that we've found a solid census trail for her, 1841-1851-1861.

OK, so my initial impression of a woman from Norwich getting married in London, because she's posh is simply wrong. She got married in London because she lived there!

The evidence for poshness continues to fade away...
