trying to find a illegitimate birth
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 15:21 BST (UK) »
Hi All
Not sure if anyone can help but trying to find a birth of a child that my mother had when she maybe was around 14 to 18 years old, this would have been about 1925 to 1931 as she then met and married my Father in 1932. My mother was born in 1913. The story was given to me by my Sister, and my Mother was sent away to have the child and it was adopted, she never did name the father, My mother told my sister that he was christened George Morley and remained back in grantham in Lincolnshire. I have searched lots of web sites but have yet to find any information.

My Mothers Name : Lucy Morley , born 1913 Grantham, Lincolnshire died in 2003.
Son born around 1925 to 1931
Married my father (Cyril Roberts, in Dec. 1932) (he was born in Grantham)
My Mother had connections with Chesterfield, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
Thanks for looking and if I can help with any more info please contact me.

If she was sent away to have the child, where was she living at the time?

This one caught my eye:

George Morley Mother's Maiden Surname: Morley
Mar qtr 1925 Derby RD
Volume 7b  Page 972

Do you know if George had a middle name? I think all the others on KGarrad's list have middle names. She would have been 12 to have a baby in 1925.  :-\ :(

thanks for all the information, george did not have a middle name, my mother was born in Old somerby, grantham in 1913.
she then, I believe went to live with her Grandparents ( George and Emily Hough or Hoff) in Ropsley near Grantham, after her father Harry Morley was killed in the first world war in 1914 and his wife ( Annie Morley ) was destitute.
I can only assume that she became pregnant at a very early age.

I may send for the birth cert for George in derbyshire.

If you apply for the certificate, state that you only want it if the mother's name is Lucy Morley - that way you won't waste money if it's not the right certificate.

Lucy Morley of Ropsford was in court in 1931, summoned for riding a motor cycle without a licence and without a third party certificate of insurance. Was being given driving lessons by a Thomas Henry Clark, who was riding pillion.

It seems impossible to believe that at just turned eleven years of age she was in Derby giving birth to an illegitimate child.
That March qtr 1925 one can I think be eliminated anyway. Try searching the 1939 Register (we are not allowed to do look ups) - the free index suggests he was born 1924 (end of!)

From what you say, there is only heresay evidence for the name George.
And if Lucy really was sent away to have a child, can you know if it was miles away from home, or just somewhere else in the Grantham area?
You would have to look later in time, and possibly try closer to home.
