I know it will be time consuming and possibly without any result but have you tried going through all the William Smiths' Army records to see if any has his wife as next of kin?

At the start of the Great War every town in Britain had its PALS Regiments (the most famous one is the Accrington Pals Regiment that lost most of its men in one battle).  As the only fact known is the town where they married - have you thought to see if there is a Wm Smith in that town's PAL Regiment?

What was his stated age shown on his marriage certificate?   and what was the date of marriage?

His father's name and occupation should also be on his marriage certificate. That may just help in searching backwards - or at least cut down the possibilities.

Where did the marriage take place?
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Hi, thx all,  I did not know about pals,  might be worth ago,  William and Doris Mabel Wilding married in 1916 in West Ham London, We know his dad was George but not where he was born the address on the marriage Cert is the same as Doris.  It is a mystery as he walked out of the family home and apparently no one knew what happened to him or it was hushed up and all we can ask are deceased now. He was born in about 1891, where is not known.

What was William's own occupation on the marriage cert?

Who were the witnesses?

Have you tried checking the marital address in 1911 to see who was living there?

Between 1919 - 1933, there were 6 births in West Ham to children with surname Smith, mmn Wilding - are these your family? I wonder if any of the children's names would refelct those in their parents' families?

When did William leave his family?
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

On the marriage Cert William is stated as (looks like) Bomberdeir in then RHA, which was 1916 was told by a daughter who lives in Belgium that he was in Kings own Royal rifles. Believe he left the marital home in early 1930's.  His daughter does not know/remember anything else she is late 80's and only surviving relative.
