Robert and Margaret Henderson bc1716 and c1724 Yester
« on: Friday 22 April 16 16:11 BST (UK) »
The above are my 5 x gt grandparents and I'm trying to establish who their ancestors were, they married 25/7/1752 at Yester. I think the parents of Robert might be Robert 1690 and Mary Thomson bc 1687 but unfortunately the same set can be given to Margaret too? Robert and Margaret had the following children:
George b 11 May 1753 Bankhead, Yester,
Susan 30 Nov 1754 Bankhead Yester,
Robert 8 Dec 1756,
John 16 Mar 1759,
Margaret 27 Apr 1761,
Janet 12 Feb 1764 and
James 8 Feb 1767
 all born and bapt Yester.
I understand that there is a Scottish naming custom and wonder if it applies with these. Also Susan seems to be an unusual Scottish name especially for my Hendersons'?

Hi Cockneyrebel,

I had a search on FreeReg and in Yester Parish Church on 27 Jun 1752, a Robert Anderson married a Margaret Henderson. Could this be the marriage you are asking for further details about. Unfortunately the Parish records did not give parents details.

Hi Cckneyrebel,

I then searched under LDS Family Search, https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTGP-JX6, and came up with a Robert Henderson marrying a Margaret Henderson. in Yester Parish Church on 27 Jul 1752.

So what record has been mis-transcribed?

On ScotlandsPeople website searched and got,

   25/07/1752   HENDERSON   ROBERTT   MARGARET HENDERSON/FR259 (FR259)   M   YESTER   /EAST LOTHIAN   725/00 0010 0503

So it looks like the FreeReg one is incorrect.

Yes Tom, I'm going with the LDS version of Robert Henderson marrying Margaret Henderson-presumably 2 different Henderson families at Yester 27/7/1752 and am interested to know who you believe their parents were?

Hi Cockneyrebel,

If Scottish Naming convention was used for their family,

Roberts parents should be George and Margaret Henderson.

Margarets would be Robert and Susan.

SCOTTISH NAMING PATTERNS

Most often used pattern for given names was

1st son after paternal grandfather
2nd son after maternal grandfatther
3rd son after father
1st daughter after maternal grandmother
2nd daughter after paternal grandmother
3rd daughter after mother

Hi again,

On FreeReg,
Susan DOUGLAS married Robert HENDERSON on 09 Jun 1722 in Yester Parish Church, East Lothian

AND

Margarat THOMSON married George HENDERSON   on 02 Nov 1728   in Yester Parish Church, East Lothian
That seems to be the 2 Henderson families that you are looking for.

Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

The parents names are a perfect match as Robert and Margaret's parents. The problem is that there's no birth/baptism record for a son named Robert just the birth records for James b.1730, Andrew b.1732, Patrick b.1734 and Helen b.1737. There is a gap between the marriage date of Nov 1728 and the birth date of the first registered child's birth of Apr 1730 so it's possible that Robert was born in 1729 but there's no proof. The same thing applies to Margaret, there is no birth record for a daughter named Margaret with parents Robert & Susan Douglas, but there's a gap in the birth records between 1729 and 1742 when their last child (Robert) was born so she could have been born about 1731.
What do you think or do you have access to any different Scottish records?

Hi CR,

Went back to FreeReg, they have baptism of Robert Henderson on 15 Jan 1716 to parents Robt Henderson (Smith, a blacksmith) and Mary Thomson witnesses Hector Henderson and John Thomson.

I have found a baptism for Margaret Henderson on 16 Feb 1724, to parents, Robert Henderson and Mary Thomson, witnesses were Tho. Henderson and George Allan.

If they are same Robert Henderson and Mary Thomson, we have a possible incestual marriage, or we may have 2 Robert Henderson's married to 2 Mary Thomson's. (Scratching my head)

If nothing else, it proves not to rely on Scottish Naming Patterns 100%.
