I was born at 8 Wood Row Twizell in 1937 which I understand were Colliery Houses but I cannot understand why my parents (my father was in the Army at the time) were living in a Colliery House. My father was in the East Yorks Regiment at the time so was there an Army regiment based around the area with Army Married quarters?

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat.
They may not have been living there permanently. Using the free 1939 register search there was someone called Garnham living there. Could your mother have just gone there to give birth to you?

Hi
You can do a person or street search on the 1939 register but you will need credits or subscription to view it.

It was not unusual at that time for young married couples to rent rooms in a house - and miners were well known for taking in lodgers
My uncle who married late 1930's lived in rooms in a colliery house - usually terraced houses and the "front room" was let out -not necessarily to miners
Possibly the people who lived at that address in 1937 were Henry Garnham and his wife Margaret
It seems Henry 's father was a coal miner -as I believe Henry was
Henry (if i am on the right track) died 3 Aug 1953 at 5 Twizell Lane
