Great grandfather, William Alfred Lea Sr.
« on: Wednesday 27 April 16 15:30 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather, William Alfred Lea, is listed as a traveler born in 1863 in Wem, Shropshire, England.  What is meant by the term "traveler"?

Where is he listed as such?

If a census, have you found him on other censuses, or marriage, or birth of children etc to see what he gives as his occupation then?

In isolation it is hard to judge what is meant - maybe he is a gypsy/traveller/caravan dweller , or maybe he is just some sort of travelling salesman or travel linked occupation!

He was in prison in Liverpool in 1891

Occupation given then as Commercial Traveller (cabinet furniture)

so I would say he was some sort of travelling salesman

He would be a commercial traveller for a furniture maker, who sold goods, or took orders for goods, on production of samples, generally by calling on the consumers as a representative of his/her firm, and worked usually on a commission basis, or on a small salary and commission. They usually operated in particular districts, displaying samples to prospective buyers in their shops. Commercial traveller and Travelling Salesman are one and the same.
