How old are these photographs?

Hi all,

I wondered if anyone could please date these two photographs:





A relative has told me that he believes the old man and woman on the bench to be his great-grandparents, who died between 1890 and 1900. I simply wanted to know whether the photograph could be accurately dated to that period.

The horse and cart photo will be later, but I am not sure exactly when. I would imagine about 1930, judging by who I know to be in the photo.

Could any photography experts please confirm (or not!) these theories?

Photo 1 is just after the turn of the 20th century - 1910 or so. The second is the 1920's coming into the 30's. The trap they are in is, I believe, called a Governess' Cart.

I'm going to have a guess at this before the experts give you a more educated opinion ...

I thought that the second photo looked 1930s before I read that is what you believe.
I think the photo of the elderly couple might be 1920s.  :)

That confirms what I thought about the horse and cart photo, so thanks to you both for that.

However, I am concerned at the 1910+ dating of the other photo, as the man died in 1900 and I think (but am not 100% sure) that his wife died in 1890.

However, if my relative has wrongly identified who is in that photo then it would of course explain the discrepancy.

What type of photo is the first one James is it a postcard...are you able to show us the back?

No, sorry, I'm afraid both of those are scans of old photographs sent to me by a relative. I'm not even sure who has the original photos at present.

I would agree with AJ on the date of the first one...not as early as 1890 and also agree with 1930s on the 2nd photo.

Oh my Goodness. I'm in shock, these are my great great grandparents.  Andrew Wylie (Died 1900) and Jane McBride (Died 1890).

Hi James,
The dates are correct, Andrew my great - great grandfather died in Balleywatermoy in 1900 and my great-great grandmother died in 1890. My mom has the death certificates.
