Janet Scott
« on: Friday 29 April 16 16:01 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the burial/or marriage of Janet Scott.

She married William Smith, they had 9 children that I know of.  William died 28 March 1845 Lochmaben and was buried in that area with some of his children. (no marriage found)

We don't know much about this couple, a story in the family said that she was born Lady Janet Scott, who eloped with the Shepherd William Smith.

I myself don't agree with this tale.

Two death reports from a Newspaper:

2/6/1845 - At the house of his son-in-law, Mr Mitchell South Queensferry on 2nd ult. at a ripe old age, Mr William Scott for many years the respectable tenant of Glenkiln.

10/1847 - At Queensferry on 19th ult. Janet Scott, relict of the late James Smith, Shepherd, Glenkiln (James I think is a printing error as his name was William)

I am certain this is Janet and her father, she was either visiting or had moved to the Queensferry area after her husbands death. They both came from Glenkiln (Janet and her Husband)

I hope someone can help me with this query

I have sent for CD of South Queensferry inscriptions/gravestones to see if that turns up anything, I've also been tracing whom I think are Janet Scott's sibling's.

This individual visited the Kirkmichael Parish Churchyard in Scotland prior to sending the e-mail and found William’s gravestone. I would imagine it has further eroded with the passage of over a decade since that time. Here is the inscription on the gravestone that he sent us:

In Memory of
DAVID SMITH son of WILLIAM SMITH
And JANET SCOTT SMITH who died at Black-
Cleugh 11th January 1835 aged 19 years
PETER SMITH died 1st November 1837 aged
15 years. And WILLIAM SMITH who
died 7th May 1841 aged 27 years.
And AMELIOUS SMITH who died at
Glenkiln 15th May 1843 aged 15 years
And WILLIAM SMITH their father
who died at Lochmaben 28th March
1845 aged 52 years.

You will notice no mother buried beside her husband
