name change
« on: Wednesday 20 July 05 09:27 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there are any records that I could look at to confirm that a  name change had occurred (presumably by deed poll).
This would have propbably been in Glasgow about 1917 ish

In Scotland you don't have to go through any formal procedure to change your name ... you simply adopt whatever name you like and let everyone know that that is what you are to be known by.

The only stipulation was that you could not change your name to escape any legal proceedings or requirements on you.

Thanks,

doesn't look like I can find any proof of a name change then.

I guess you would also need to tell all 'official bodies' as well about a name change - to make sure you get your pension etc etc.

A simple letter to any authorities identifying yourself and the name you want to be known by is all that is required.

I had the same problem I don't think you need to inform anyone just change your name as long as it is not for illegal purpose. My name change happened in 1901 census this caused me a lot of problems trying to find my family name beyond 1901 until I check my greatgrand mothers name for her marriage and found my surname should be different than it is.

Hi Huddgy

yes looks like we had the same problem.

I shall just take it that I have found the right person - everything matches apart from the surname. I was looking for confirmation but doesn't look like it exists. Anyway I'm sure I've got the right person.

He certainly took some finding, but found him in the end.
