Revenue and Greenwich Pensioner - Thomas Bailey 1801
« on: Monday 02 May 16 19:02 BST (UK) »
I am trying to join the dots on the life of my descendant Thomas Bailey (b 1901 Hull). He appears in Grimsby census' from 1841 to 1881 , excluding 1871. His occupations have shown as:
Coffee House keeper and retired mariner (1851)
superannuated revenue officer (1861)
Revenue and Greenwich Pensioner (1881)

Which are the best records to try and find out about his life in the early c19?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

And who would have thought Grimsby would have a coffee house in 1851

The 1861 census records his mother living with the family -

Elizabeth Bailey b. 1769, Thurnscoe Clee Parish Lincolnshire England

That is a help to find his parents.

I've got an 18th century Scottish revenue mariner amongst my ancestors.

Here's a couple of websites below that might help:-

hmm that second link doesn't seem to work - here's the original "long" link

The 1871 census occupation shows superannuated Revenue , then in brackets possibly- 'deported mariner'. Have I read that correctly?

The coastguard and Customs links are great thanks, and I will explore these.
