Cant find in a census or BMD
« on: Tuesday 03 May 16 10:08 BST (UK) »
HELP Plzzzzzzzz Lancashire

I am trying to trace more on Bertha Stafford Lowther who married Myles Ashburner Atkinson in 1908 in Lancashire. The cert has her father Amos Hodgson Lowther  Innkeeper.
Amos married Jane Stafford in 1892 Ulverston District

in 1939 register Bertha has DOB  7 May 1889

I have not been able to find  her in any census or the 3 of them in 1901 or 1911. I thought perhaps her mother was either single or a widow  when she had Bertha.

Any thoughts, ANY help be much appreciated

Not having much luck either.... found Amos Lowther in the 1871, 1881 and 1891, census, but no sign in 1901 or 1911. And he's not in the death index either.

On Ancestry there is a record for Amos Lowther in the "UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960". He sailed to Southampton from South Africa in 1903. If you have access to Ancestry you can see if this is your man :) There's one other Amos Lowther in England.

Looks likely that Bertha was born before Amos's marriage to Jane... so there are 3 possibilities:
1) Amos is her father but Jane is not her mother (unlikely, Amos was single when he married Jane, and the middle name "Stafford" suggests she is connected to Jane)
2) Jane is her mother but Amos is not her father - she took his name later and chose to name him as her father, whether she knew the truth or not
3) Amos and Jane are her parents but were not married when she was born

Amos was an iron miner in the 1891 census.

The January 1903 passenger list for the RMS Briton arrived Southampton lists Amos, Jane and Bertha Lowther returning from Natal. He was a miner.

There's an archive record of a 1903 compensation claim by an Amos Lowther in Transvaal

It looks like they went back to South Africa in June 1903 on the Braemar Castle: Mr A Lowther 33, Mrs Lowther 36, and Miss B Lowther 15.

That explains why Amos has disappeared from 1901/1911/death index! Worth looking for a death in South Africa...

Bit of a suggestion

1871 & 1881 there is a Joseph Stafford, station master in kents Bank, Lower Allithwaite (Ulverston district).

On 1871 he has a 9 yr old daughter Jane. 1881 there is a Jane Stafford aged 18 b Kents bank working as a servant

1891 there's a Lilie Stafford b Kents Bank c1865, single, living in Ulverston with a niece Lilie b c1888 in Accrington

I can't see a sister to Jane called Lilie, or a Lilie (orsimilar) Stafford b Accrington c1888

there is however this intriguing baptism!

Bertha Stafford - [Child] of Elijah Stafford & Jane
Baptism 29 Mar 1888 St James, Accrington, Lancashire
Born: 7 Mar 1888
23, Prospect Terrace, Willows Lane
Occupation: Labourer

OK so the date of birth doesn't fit, but if the Jane of Kents Bank is ours, she's a little flexible with her age!
