Did cathedrals keep registers?

I feel as though I ought to know the answer to this!

Did cathedrals keep registers in the same way as parish churches?
If so, can they be found online?

I am going potty trying to find records for Archbishop Edwin Sandys marriage to Cicely Wilford (1588?), his son Edwin's baptism (c1561) and four marriages (to Margaret Eveleigh, Ann Southcote, Elizabeth Nevinson and Katherine Bulkeley).

There are biographies giving exact or approximate dates, but I have trawled freereg and any other free site I can find but can't find transcripts or images of the original records!  At least another line of the Sandys family (in Hawkshead, Lancs) are recorded in the parish registers - but none of them are the ones I am looking for.

Some cathedrals are 700 years old,   they have probably kept their archive records,  but not  put them on line in most cases.

Are the biographies recent? If so, perhaps you could write to the authors to ask where their information came from [assuming they have not given references].

As an example I tried to find B/M/B(urial) records for Durham Cathedral. Out of print now but may/may not be available for purchase in the future.

Google Archbishop Edwin Sandys and that will give you numerous articles on the Archbishop.

Books should be available at one of the Copyright Libraries.

Durham County Record Office has the Durham Cathedral Registers for  Baptisms 1609-1896, Marriages 1610-1896, and Burials 1611-1896. A second hand copy of the Durham Cathedral Registers 1609-1896 CD-ROM is available on line.

Many thanks for the responses.

1) The eighteenth and nineteenth century biographies I have seen do not quote original church records or give reliable sources (hence the "approximate" dates).  Newer biographies and articles (and online trees!) tend to quote older biographies.

2) Durham is a good example - thank you.  Unfortunately, I have no idea where the events took place and to buy books or CDs for several cathedrals (assuming they were available) would work out rather too pricey.  Particularly as my line of the family went to Ireland in the middle of the 17th century, so I am only looking for a handful of records in a period of about 100 years.

What your replies do indicate is that although records may exist they are not freely searchable online.  This saves me time searching fruitlessly  I think this will be another "set it to one side for a few years" piece of research.  As more records go online there may be cathedral registers available in the future.
