Flishers of Romney Marsh
« on: Wednesday 20 July 05 12:44 BST (UK) »
Just starting a new line in my tree - that of my mother's father. His name was Eric Earle Flisher, and I have the outline of a tree stretching back to Daniel Flisher in Lydd in the late 18th century. Other interesting facts so far is his son George Flisher, who at some time in the late 1800's became the innkeeper of the Fluer De Lys pub in Brenzett, and Edward Flisher who became a cabinet maker in Sandgate in the same period.

Just wondering if anyone has any Flishers from Romney Marsh in their tree.

Hi Spongebob,

We are related!

I have been researching the Flisher Family line  (and all related families) for around 25 years now. I have gone back to Clement Flisher born c1644. I have quite a comprehensive Flisher family tree.

Your grandfather Eric was my uncle, his sister is my mother. If you would like any information please do not hesitate to ask.

Eric's ggrandfather was a publican at the Fleur De Lis Inn in Sandgate in 1861, he died aged 38 some 7 years later.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Was in Hawkinge Cemetary (nr Folkestone) looking for one of my Wilsons today and came across a Flisher grave; Edgar Earle Flisher d.1939 age 47 and wife Mabel Bessie d.1975 age 82.  PM me if you would like a picture  ;D

Yes, this is the grave of Eric Earle's parents. Eric Earle Flisher and Peggy Flisher (nee Lane) are also buried here, and on the same gravestone. Eric died in 1986 and Peggy in 2003. If you took a picture anyway I would like a copy, but don't make a special trip as I can do that.

Hi Matt,

Thought I had better point out, just in case someone else is researching this line in the future, that Peggy and Eric are not buried with Mabel and Edgar.  The ashes of Leonard and Harold are buried in this grave though. I am pretty sure that Eric's memorial is behind the crematorium.

I have emailed you with fuller details.

Steph, thanks again for the offer and for the lovely comments regarding the upkeep of the grave. It is my mum that does all the hard work, I just visit and put flowers on.

It is my understanding that the FLISHERS of Romney Marsh are but one branch that can be traced back to Kent.  Some of the Flisher families moved to Somerset, Dorset & Devon.

John FLISHER of Weymouth married Emma WHITE - one of the children was George John FLISHER born in the Plymouth region in 1870 or 1871.
In 1891, George was residing in the abode of Richard ZELLEY in Weymouth.
Also, another George FLISHER born in Weymouth would return to the Kent roots in the 1890's where he is found in the 1901 Census.

I started a Flisher site, but haven't done much with it for at least a year
at  http://www.tribalpages.com/tribes/weymouth1871

Zelley,  Lovell, Godbold, Woods, Phillips, Lewis, Emery,
Magee, Baker, White. Flisher, Kyne, Tilston, Valence/Vallens,
Mabb/Mabbe, Bellamy, Selley, Martha Smith, Arno (of Dartmouth, Devon}.
Dorset, London, Warwick, East Anglia, Kent,  Devon
North Wales

The ancestors lived here and there, in many scattered
places, with various occupations

Wasn't that the same Clement residing in Cantebury, if so the Dorset & Devon based Flisher families are related - I'm a fourth cousin
of George John Flisher  -in the early 1900's he was in the Plympton, Devon area.
