Where (on earth) is Bearley?

Thanks for that; I think it confirms that Bearley (fields) is not where the Gentleman Stevens come from.

I think Bearley might be a big(ish) house or estate; think of the "Churchills of Blenheim".

Sadly, I have a chicken and egg; if I could find Bearley, I could probably find the Stevens, and if I could find the Stevens, I could probably find Bearley.

Between Bere Ferrers and Bere Alston in Devon there is a place called The Ley.
Might he have called it Bere Ley/s which was translated as Bearleys

Challacombe is in North Devon; looking around the area, is it possible that Bearley was somehow misheard from Berry? As in Berry Down Cross?
