O'Connell St aka Tea Lane Tullamore
« on: Thursday 05 May 16 17:25 BST (UK) »
This is a BIG ask but would  any of you wonderful roots chatters have or know of anyone who might have in their possession any old photos of  O'Connell Street aka Tea Lane ,this would be prior to early fifties before it was demolished.
I am putting together a short  account of my family who lived there before its demise and would love to be able to include a photograph.I have searched on line and there is only one to be found but this one is used on a regular basis and I am hoping to find one not in general use.

Regards to all on here

Scatty, it just so  happens that the Tullamore Tribune (local paper) published (5/5/16 edition) an article  by Michael Byrne of Offaly Historical Society (which is located not far from the original tae lane) the history of the area and plots its story from the 1790's. It included some early maps and photo graphs. If you want a copy of the paper I'don't be happy to post it on to you if you PM your address. I'll  see if I can send on a photo of the pictures contained in the article.

Hope this helps.

Scatty - is the work you are doing for publication or just personal use? If not personal I'm sure there are lots of people on this site who would love to read it. I can just about remember 'Tae Lane'.
I'm sure there are some great stories.

Hello Brendan,
Apologies for the delay in replying to your inquiry.
This has been a personal journey for me but am happy to share as you have expressed an interest. in hearing more.
In April last year I paid a visit to Tullamore and had a wonderful time including a very worthwhile visit to to the heritage centre. While there I was extremely fortunate to have an opportunity to meet with Michael Byrne, Secretary of the Offaly Historical and Archaelogy Society who is also a published author of local history.
At this particular time he was in the process of writing a series of articles on the subject of Tea Lane and on hearing that I was born in this very place we chatted about my father's family, mainly my McCormack side.
During our conversation it transpired that I may have been one of the last children, if not the last child born there before its demise and he kindly asked me to write down as much as I knew about Tea Lane but unfortunately my family moved away shortly after I was born so I did not have any personal recollections to share.
On reflection afterwards and mainly because my McCormack surname has not continued going forward I decided to write up a brief story of my father, his brothers and grandfather from what I had been told growing up,basically for personal use and to be shared within the family. It is anecdotal as well as incorporating names, dates etc from my family tree. At his time I cannot see it being published as a whole, although I did send a copy to the society for their records and subsequently my grandfather was mentioned briefly in the finished article along with his photograph and I too had a mention.
All in all it was a very worthwhile exercise and the family were delighted.

Once again thank you for your interest and very best wishes.

Best Wishes

I must try to get a copy of that from OHS as I used be a member.
It just caught my eye that you have a Brophy, Egan and McCormac connection on your Tullamore side as do I - Ann Egan from Back Road, Daingean married Michael Molloy from Tullamore.  They are one set of my great grandparents and I have a photograph of them as well as some anecdotes. Annes sister, Bridget married a McCormac (aka 'Aunt 'Biddie' McCormack').
Are there any Alex Brophys in that tree - if so I might also be able to help you with antecedents on that name?
