There is an article in the Dundee Courier regarding the will of Hugh David Lusk of Annan in 1934- executors named as Andrew Potter Lusk, Matthew Hamilton Hill, Helen Stillie Hill and Lt Col.Wm John  Millar. Andew Potter Lusk died later the same year. I wonder if the Elna Stillie Hill I referred to  earlier was actually Helen. ( The address is given in both as Branxholm, Kilmalcolm).

A search for Matthew  Hamilton Hill  in the newspaper archive suggests that he became Deputy Lieutenant of Renfrewshire in 1940.

William

Added Hugh David Lusk would appear to be  the younger brother of Andrew Potter Lusk born 12 Aug 1860 in Girvan.

Further  to  the above Helen Agnes Lusk, sister of Andrew Potter Lusk and Hugh David Lusk died a spinster in Greenock in 1942. She also left a will - executors named as Helen Lusk Hill and Matthew Hamilton Lusk Hill (the newspaper articles regarding his appointment as Deputy Lieutenant also include Lusk in his name). My suspicion is that, going back to the original query,  Helen Stillie Hill is the lady you are looking for and that the L in Helen L Hill is for Lusk.

James Hamilton Hill died in 1932 and also left a will.(Executors named confirm Matthew and Helen are his son and daughter). His wife Margaret died in 1946( executors named as Helen Lusk Hill, spinster and Matthew Hamilton Lusk Hill). Coincidence that 1946 was the year painting donated?

thanks William and others. Great leads for the family connections and addresses. i now have Helen's (Elma) death date 1978 in Glasgow. Her parents connection to Kilmalcolm and family business connections with grain Merchants has given me plenty to work on. I think you are right about the 1946 date...probably inherited the painting then gifted to glagow. many thanks , David
