Coroner's report - margin annotations
« on: Friday 13 May 16 16:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a coroner's report from 1902 and in the middle of a testimony there is an annotation in the margin that is 'XXd' where the 'd' is in superscript. A few lines later there is another annotation that looks like 'neXd' (again superscripted 'd'). The text between these annotations seems to be a challenge or question on some previous text.

Does anyone have any idea what these annotations mean?

To me (as a barrister):

"XX" denotes cross-examination, which is sometimes followed by "re-X" or "reX", which is re-examination by the witness's own counsel.

So could it be: "cross-examined", followed by (if the n is in fact an r) "re-examined" as part of the inquest proceedings?

Yes it could be an 'r' so spot on; thanks for your help.
