Sarah Borthistle born c 1858 Co Wexford IRE
« on: Monday 16 May 16 05:25 BST (UK) »
I am seeking confirmation of the birth c 1858 of Sarah Borthistle in Co Wexford IRE. She migrated aged 7 with her family, arriving in Melbourne Dec 1865 on the Donald McCay. Parents were Thomas Borthistle and Jane Borthistle(nee Donovan) from Parish of Ferns, townland of Effernogue. Sarah married James Kennedy at Enmore Sydney in 1883 and birthplace was listed as Wexford on the marriage certificate. I know that civil registration in Ireland did not start until 1864 but I am hoping there may be evidence of Sarah's birth details.

All of the Borthistles in Co. Wexford on the 1901 census are Church of Ireland, so that's the baptism records you probably need to check. see : http://www.rootschat.com/links/01hn4/
Very few Wexford church of Ireland parishes online, and I dont think Ferns are included yet, some parishes on the Church of Ireland website, and think just two or three on RootsIreland

On www.nationalarchives.ie Griffith Valuation records has a Thomas Borthistle in Ferns as a tenant of a sizeable land holding.  You could also check Tithe Applotment records on this site. This will enable you to confirm Townland, Parish etc in your quest to track down other records. Good luck.

www.from-ireland.net/ferns-old-graveyard-records-wexford  has several burials listed for Borthistles going back to 1700's.

Hi
There's a marriage licence bond Thomas Borthistle and Jane Donovan 1839 diocese of Ossory on FindMyPast.

I can't see any children for them but there's a possible baptism Thomas Borthcatle 8.11.1821 Ferns Enniscorthy s of John Borthcastle and Mary Fortune godparents Edward Reilly and Catherine Malone.

Could be him.

There's a brother George died in Australia 1842-1865 so it's about the right date.
