Bond - Vocalists and Actor/Actresses
« on: Tuesday 17 May 16 23:09 BST (UK) »
Hello, newbie to the site and family research  :) I was wondering if anyone had any experience of researching ancestors who were either vocalists or actors/actress ? I am trying research the Bond family.

George Bond b1846 Islington Middlesex London
Annie (Anne) b1849 Islington Middlesex London
George Bond b1871 Deal Kent
Annie Bond b1873 London
Herbert b1875 London
Arthur b1878 Westenham Kent
Amy b1880 Chelmsford
Mary b1886 Herfordshire

As you can see they moved around quite a bit while in Deal, George and Annie were listed as vocalists in 1871 census. Then by 1881 census they are both listed as Theatrical actors living in Essex. By 1901 census their daughters Annie and Amy were both boarding separately up in Spa Common, East Retford, Nottinghamshire. I have been able to find any more information about their professional work, not knowing their stage names or where I should be looking online ?  I'm also at a loss as to what was happening in Nottingham in 1900s for them both to work as actresses ?

Both George and Annie just disappear after 1881 census with their son George now head of house looking after younger siblings with his sister Annie until she moved to Nottinhgham. George emigrated to the USA in 1907 later joining the US army, while Arthur soldier based in Cheriton Kent. Herbert my great grandfather become a baker, I'm also looking for any information about what happened to his children from his second marriage Marjorie, Kenneth and May my grandmothers half siblings.

Any help greatly appreciated I've not subscribed to any of the paid sites yet so have been relying on the various free sites mostly BMD so far. I had no success searching The Stage site archives for any mentions.

I hope I am posting this in the correct place if not please more or delete.

George Chas Bond 44  St Sepulchres, London
Annie Bond 40 Islington, London
Francis Bond 5  Hertford, Hertfordshire

In 1901 I think they were lodging in East Retford, Nottinghamshire with son George   https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSNN-T95

George Bond 55 Comedian  London
George Bond 30 Scenic Artist  Deal, Kent

If we could find out what production was being staged in East Retford on 31 March1901 it might help to find the stage names of the players. Apart from the Bonds there were other actors and comedians in town on census night:

Tom Taylor
Charles Spray
Charles Alfred Asher
Henry Hill
John H Knight
Bridges M Knight
Walter French
Blanche W Asher
Dolly Thurston
Edward Denson
Louisa Milford

Thanks you for the welcome and your kind help  :)

I was just hitting a wall this will give me more to work with now. I never knew George was scenic painter which fits in with two paintings we have he completed and brought back on visit from America in 1930s. I'm an artist so I was always interested in finding out more about him with his painting being part of my life and our family for so long. First time Francis has been mentioned too, so someone else to follow up.

Yes  :) Thank you that was my great grandfather, I have an original copy of the probate which is my last point of reference for his children from second marriage. I tracked down one which seems could be them but no exact address to contact. His son I believe died and other child had no progress.

Thank you I will try this. On the census for lodging house one sister lived I think were other actors, so I could see if searching those names throw up any links with mentions. Should be easier than researching the other family members performing history in London. Needle in haystack springs to mind ;) Don't think they hit big time which makes it more difficult to find anything. If they had I'm sure I would have heard of them before now from at least one relative  ;) 8)
