Jarvis William (Willie) Thorpe
« on: Wednesday 18 May 16 17:26 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me find some further information about Jarvis William (Willie) Thorpe.  I know he was born in 1865 in Bosmere, Suffolk and that he became a Blacksmith by profession.  I know he married but I do not know to whom and that he had children who all married in the 1920 in Croydon.
Can anyone assist me?  I would love to find out who he married and who his parents were.  I have tried to locate him on the 1871 census but to no avail which is rather strange.
Many thanks

Maybe?

MArriage
Oct/Nov/Dec 1903
London City
1c 21
William Gervaise Thorpe  to either Ada Martha Hill or Florence Maud Lloyd

Going off that one, as later census suggests no children.

What were the childrens names of "your" one? When and where were they born?

Birth
Jan/Feb/Mar 1865
Bosmere
Jarvis Willie Thorpe

He seems to be on 1911 census - look ups aren't allowed, but that would give you his wife and children's names I would think.

I wonder if this is his marriage, with Jarvis being misread as Jabez somewhere along the line

Hi Lizdb & Keyboard86
Many thanks for your information. Funnily enough I saw a mention of Jabez and wondered if they were one and the same!
My information is that he was born in 1865 and definitely in Bosmere, Suffolk and died in 1927 in Croydon, London.  His profession was a blacksmith.
With regards his children Willie had the following:- Maud Alice b 1884, Annie b1898, Ellen b1900, George Robert b1902 & John Thomas.  These were found by my friend via Ancestry by looking into marriages - they all listed Jarvis as their father.
My link into this research is two ways.  Firstly my friend wanted me to look into her family history - her surname is Turner - and Jarvis came up when I started to delve.  Secondly, she needed to clear an Aunts and Uncles home and in the process we found some Boar and WW1 medals for an Arthur White.  I am still trying to link her family with these medals.  Her Mother has filled in some gaps and therefore verified that I am on the right track but you know what we are like, I really need to know more and give my friend a fuller picture, and maybe go back a bit more than 1865.
Thank you for any help you can give.  I do believe that one of these marriages is Jarvis but which one I'm not too sure.
Thanks

Are you sure about these years of birth?

1901
36Pawsons Rd Croydon
William Jabez Thorpe 37 Blacksmith bn Bramford Suffolk
Louisa 34 bn Mortlake Surrey
Louisa 11
Ethel 9
Maud 7
John Thomas 5
Annie 3
Ellen 1   children all bn Croydon

Childrens ages fit well with the 1888 marriage of William Jabez Thorpe to Louisa Wing.
Cant see an alternative marriage.

They can be found in 1891 with 1 yr old Louisa. William is then a "hot water fitter" which ties in with his occupation on marriage cert.

I've just spent quite a while with the same dilema.

I'm on ancestry myself. I believe this man to be my Great Great Grandfather.

I have found his name misspelt as Francis (upon inspection clearly Jarvis) and I believe he had 9 children - one of which was my Great Grandfather.

I am getting a little confused in areas though, as I keep finding this Jabez too - and in at least one document, it looks like that's what was meant to be written, which is confusing.

But I have a 1901 and 1911 census that are clearly right - but in one he is William Jarvis and the other Jarvis Willie. Feel free to drop me a line and we can compare notes!
