Hi Rosie,

Yes thats my man, though he has given a wrong DOB, there are no William John James or John William James born in 1884 in Blackburn, I had a feeling so I called the Blackburn Registry Office, gave them the information I knew and they confirmed he had been born 1881!!

Yes his aunt is Florence Gregory.

In the census you showed me for 1891, it does seem like its the family I'm after, John William is 9 though need to find  marriage.

Yes he is.

he went to Canada as a child, and married there, also joined the Canadian army and came back to England, and married my Great Grandmother.

The problem he was known as John James, JWJ and WJJ, very confusing

are you able to find a marriage for the family in Cheshire 1891 census?

The army file does say that he was a widower. Have you seen the full file (56 pages) including his will leaving everything to James Gregory?
