Francis Warden
« on: Thursday 19 May 16 22:45 BST (UK) »
Francis Warden was a prominent civil servant in Bombay in the early 19th century, and became a director of the East India Company on his return to England.  Although there is a mass of information about his work and writings, i can find nothing about his family relationships, specifically whether he was related to the Wardens in the British Factory in Lisbon.

He made a Will, proved 1853.  I cant get it to open at the moment, will have a look later if I get the chance. That may reveal family.

Can (or should!) be able to be viewed on Ancestry, or I imagine can be downloaded from National Archives for a small fee.

Ive just managed to go through the Will, managed to get it on screen today!

The relatives it refers to seem to be:

Eliza Kensington - sister of my late dear wife
Frederick Warden - cousin who is a captain in the Royal Navy
John Warden - cousin, and described as oldest son of his late uncle George Warden by his second wife, who is a Civil Servant East India Company in Bombay.
John something Warden, son of the above John Warden, now at school in Blackheath.
Richard Warden, son of his late cousin Richard Warden, formerly a captain in the artillery of Bombay establishment of East India company
Francis Warden, second son of the said John Warden
Harriet Simpson, widow of John Simpson of Sussex, and Charlotte Ruse wife of Rev Jospeh Ruse, both sisters of the said John Warden

Addition saying that the son of Richard Warden has been erroneously named as Richard Warden in the Will, he is really George Warden and is at school in Blackheath

Will written 1846.

So - seems he had no children, or no surviving children, or if he did then he was estranged from them.
And lots of rellies mentioned!!!!!

1851

31 Upper Gower Street, St PAncras
H/H of Charles Howard, private tutor.
household consists of several students
one of which -
George Warden 17 bn East India

several others can be found in 1851 - just put in Warden and born India!

I think there is the beginnings of quite a substantial Warden tree.

I wont do any more, don't want to take over and spoil your fun.

Many thanks again - the challenge with my relations is that everyone is called either George or Francis or even George Francis.  Which makes it puzzling but also fairly easy to spot a potential link.

Hi, I am a historian of education from India and have been working on Bombay Presidency. Francis warden strongly supported modern education and I have included him in our forthcoming encyclopedia  (pub/ in UK) as one of the important educators.
I have data on his activities in Bombay, but know very little about his personal life. Could any one of you help me with it?

Where did his family come from? More information on his family. I have many questions. He was born in Bombay and studied book keeping and mathematics under a master in Soho, why was he not sent to a grammar school? Why was he removed from the directorship of EIC?

With Kind Regards
parimala
