Can someone suggest how I can locate this information. I have quite a bit of detail as follows

The TNA reference of his final will is  PROB 11/1573/287 William Nicholson Lanphier, Lieutenant in His Majesty's 2nd Battalion of the 25th Regiment of Infantry or the Kings own Borderers of Dundee , Angus dated 06 October 1815.

He was court-martialled in 1814 when in the West Indies, for insubordination, but do not know final outcome of the court martial. I believe he died in 1815 and he was originally from Tipperary, Ireland but did he die abroad and if so where and how?

Unfortunately the TNA are not how can I say helpful, I've provided the information but they say only that I can pay for research or I can go in person to Kew and they may have the information. Surely they do or they don't or am I being too simplistic.

Have you obtained a copy of his will?  You can download it from TNA or you can view it on Ancestry.

Hi Barbara

I have his will and I also have a 15 page document of his court martial, but I can't seem to get further. I cannot find what happened as a result of the court martial or how and where and when he died. Family papers of the time merely record his will.

The London Gazette, nor a history of the regiment recognize that spelling of the surname. Are there any other officer's names in the court martial documents?

You will need an Army List from the time he served.

The 2nd Battalion did not serve in the West Indies. So he must have been with the 1st Bn in the West Indies;.

Ken according to the court-martial of Feb 1814 his commanding officer was Captain Adolphus Munstal of the 25th Regiment. The Court Martial took place in St Kitts. Could he have been transferred after the court-martial ?

According to the probate endorsement at the end of the will he was "Late a Lieutt in His Majesty's 25th Regt of Foot at Antigua".

When he made the will on 5 August 1809 he was "Lieutenant in His Majesty's 2d Battalion of the 25th Regiment of Infantry or the King's Own Borderers now lying at Dundee".

He recites in the will "it is probable that I shall shortly be ordered to join the first Battalion of the said Regiment now in the West Indies".

Hi Shaun be careful here and same to everyone out there who may have looked at this there are 2 William Lanphier's both are from Co Tipperary and they are cousins. One is William Nicholson the other is William Wolsey. The names are often spelt Lamphier or Lanphier and any other phonetic variation too. Both were Lieutenant Rank also. William Wolsey was with the 87th
