And some of the baptism records just give mother as Jane Marshall and no father, which might imply the child was illegitimate.

Also I have found some baptisms in B/W where father's name was recorded as William Blackford or  Marshall. These were baptisms in late 1790s / early 1800's. One of William B or M's children married into my family. I gave up trying to untangle them.

Hi Hayley,
Do you know why they needed a bond as well as a licence? Sorry I have no Idea re a Bond.

I believe they may have had about 11-12 either in Brightwalton and/or Lambourn.
If you go to this address you can see the B/Walton entries;
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01hon/

For Lambourn there are "freepages.genealogy etc here;
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pbtyc/PR_Index.html#top
Just select Lambourn then the year range.

I hope you find these links useful.

The "Marshall" bapts I have in B/W are;
John 4-4-1760 (but the mother is listed as Mary so may not be theirs or mis-transcription)
Hannah 25-3-1764
William 9-11-1766
Mary 24-12-1769
Ann 17-4-1772
Martha 1-1-1775

The following are Lambourn;
Richard 29-4-1781
Thomas 23-2-1783
Rebekah 21-8-1785
Joseph 2-3-1788
Ann 22-5-1791
James 9-11-1794

Jane Marshall (nee Blackford) may have been buried 26-5-1795 in Sparsholt. Its the only burial I have found that tends to fit. Nothing at all on William Marshall not even a Bapt...

Alan

Hi Alan,
That Certainly is a lot of children!

I couldn't find anything on william marshall either. Not on find my past anyhow.
Thankyou for the links.
On the Familysearch.org link, I see there is a Jane Marshall with husband John stagg, having an illegitimate child.
Is she the same jane or a different one?

Which of their children are you descended from?

Why would they need a bond though?

In the past before a licence was issued the couple (or more often the groom) had to make an allegation and a bond.

The allegation was a document in which the couple (groom) swore on oath that there was no impediment to the marriage.

The bond was a promise to pay a substantial sum of money (often two hundred pounds) if the marriage went a head and there was an impediment
The bond would also indemnified (protect against legal repercussions) the cleric and his surrogates for officiating an unlawful marriage.
