Barnard - British Subject Born In Belgium
« on: Tuesday 24 May 16 18:20 BST (UK) »
Hi, I think I have an ancestor called Elizabeth Mary Barnard who appears to have been born in Belgium in about 1828 but is noted as a British Subject on the census records when back in Britain.

Are there any online records I can consult to take my search further back.

Any clues about how I might find out why she was born in Belgium would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

Did she marry?

Her fathers name/occupation from any marriage certificate might be a good place to start  :)
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Hi Folks,

Thank you for your helpful replies. The Geneanet site looks worth exploring. I haven't heard of that before. First look didn't reveal anything obvious but I will have a deeper look later.

I have now managed to track down a marriage for Elizabeth so I will contact GRO for a copy of the marriage certificate and see what that reveals. This is exciting!

Thanks again for your help.

Do the census records give a birth place? If so, that makes it all much easier!

If it's like the census I've got for one of mine then it will just say Belgium BS on it.

Could try looking at baptisms at British embasy.

Thanks again everyone for replying, everyone is so helpful on here.

Unfortunately, the census only says born in Belgium (British Subject).

I cannot find her own family, only in the 1861 census once she is married to a Joseph Bradney in Wolverhampton in 1857. He must have died because then Elizabeth Bradney marries my great great grandfather George Rogers in 1867. Unfortunately I have drawn a blank in the 1871 census for George and Elizabeth but they both re-appear in the 1881 census where it again just says Belgium (British Subject). By 1891 Elizabeth is no longer with the family. Presumably she has died although a quick look at the years 1886 +/- 5 years  shows no deaths in Wolverhampton for an Elizabeth Rogers born around 1828.

I have ordered the marriage certificate for her second marriage. Hopefully that will reveal something about her father. Otherwise I may have to buy the first marriage certificate and hope that shows something different.

Thank again you helpful lot.
