Mary Jane Davey, born abt. 1859, Beaminster, Dorset

Been tearing my hair out for weeks trying to find my great grandmother, I am almost bald! If any of you clever people can help me I would be eternally grateful.

Mary Jane Davey married James Collins in Wareham in 1889. According to the marriage document, she was 30 which means she was born around 1859. Her father is shown as Frederick Davey, occupation Licensed Victualler.

Two census records I have found show that she was born in Beaminster, Dorset, and the ages on these were a bit different which means she may have been born in 1862 or 1863.

I have found a Frederick Davey from Stoke Abbot, Dorset, born abt. 1842 and married to Mary Ann Bugler. They had 5 children, the eldest being Jane Davey, born 1863. I am wondering whether Jane Davey is in fact Mary Jane as she may have changed her name later. Or possibly Mary Jane was born around 1859 and born out of wedlock and brought up by another member of the family. Or maybe I have just got the wrong Frederick Davey.

Any help would be appreciated.

CHARLES Davy was Christened 1 Jan 1865, Stoke Abbas, to FRED/MARY ANN Davy

As you know Fred Davey and Mary Ann Married late 1863

The only thing is Mary Janes Father is a diffferent Occp on Census to the M/C.

But looks like James/Mary Janes 1st Child was born before the Marriage also.

With regard to Mary Jane being listed as Jane on the census, I have come across the situation where the daughter has the same first name as her mother and is therefore referred to by her middle name, but then uses her full name for marriage etc.

Hate to throw a spanner in the works Trish but there is a baptism for a Mary Jane Bugler daughter of Jane and John Guy Bugler on 27th September 1863 in Beaminster Dorset on the familysearch.org website, it's possible the registered birth you posted above applied to this Mary Jane

And the only Mary Jane Dav(e)y of right sort of age near Beminster is the daughter of John.

I thought the same as you Trish, but realised the parents of Mary Jane Bugler had different names. But thanks for trying.   I just cannot find a Frederick Davey Victualler with a daughter called Mary Jane. My mum who is 85 was telling me that when they were children, they were not allowed to ask things so her grandparents, who all died before she was born, were never talked about. She said that is how it was back then, which is a shame.
