ALLEN, Atty (Anthony) Death 1853-1860 Truro
« on: Thursday 26 May 16 23:31 BST (UK) »
Atty ALLEN was baptised 17 Mar 1811 at St Keverne.  He married Grace DOWNING on 16 Feb 1832 at St Keverne.  Their first 2 children were born at St Keverne, the next 5 at Helston and the last 2 at Truro.

Atty was away from home in the 1851 census and Grace is shown as a widow in the 1861 census.

Since their last child was born in 1854 this narrows the range of his death to 1853-1860, but this cannot be found at FreeBMD.

Would like to know when and where he died.

Have you discounted the 1863 death on FreeBMD registered at St Austell? It wouldn't be the first time I've seen "widow" when the husband was still alive.

Atty was recorded as Anthony in the 1841 census but all other historical documents have him as Atty, so think death should have been registered under that name.

What was his occupation?

You say he was away from home in 1851

If he was a seafaring man, then maybe he died at sea.

Hi

Looking at the children, one of the older ones MARK who can possibly be traced in the census, and looked to be married in Jan 1861 just before the census,  is with wife Sarah in that census.

He married 13 January to Sarah Pascoe, what is interesting is on the certificate the brides father is noted as DECEASED, if 'Atty' was dead by this time I should think that would have been recorded on the certificate. However, on this certificate father is down as 'WILLIAM'  ???

He's the correct age on 1861 census to be Graces son and in the right area, and isn't with Grace and the rest of the family.
I can't see another marriage of a Mark Allen to rule him out and say it's not him.

The earlier generations of this family appear in my family tree  :)

There is a death of a Mark Allen in 1858, registered in the March quarter in Falmouth.  :-\

Edit: and another in MAr 1856 in Truro.  :-X

Atty is shown as a carpenter (not ship's carpenter) in 1841.  Grace is shown as carpenter's wife and oldest son Thomas as carpenter in 1851.

Stephen ALLEN marriage 9 Mar 1873 shown here.  The fact that Atty is not shown as deceased may be discounted by the observation that showing fathers as deceased does not seem to be routine in these parish records.
