Dresser:

One who dresses another. A surgeon's assistant. Also one who operated a machine which prepared threads in the textile industry. Probably the last description.

As groom states there does not seem to be a relationship to County Durham. Manchester is a more likely place for the textile industry.

You can also dress stone and slates - cut them to shape and size

You are all great,I have seen all these possibilities but here is another piece of information working backward:my grandmother Alice Ann Horrobin stated her place of birth as Bradford,Manchester on her immigration form into Canada,1932
Alice Ann Married Harry Howarth,Collyhurst Memorial Church 1900.I ordered the marriage licence.
On the licence her father is John deceased'
1891 Census of Bradford,Manchester,shows John Horrobin,Mary J. Horrobin,Alice Ann,and John is a carter for a Brickseller,1881-71-61 corroborates his job as a carter.
Now there are two John Horrobin deaths between 1891 and 1900(,1895-1897) when Alice Ann marries Harry Howarth.
John and Mary Jane also had sons,John,Joseph and Abraham.I have research their births.
Still I can not find a birth record for John.

Hi,

The marriage cert records John's age as 21 and therefore born c.1843.

There is a birth of a John Horrobin -
q3 1843, Manchester
Vol 20 Page 533

This could be worth looking at  :)

JJ

Have you discounted the above birth for John?

JJ

You know his father's name and occupation from John's marriage cert. The ideal solution would be to order the birth cert. If the father's name/occupation is the same as the marriage cert then surely that would be a match?

Y es I do know his father's name and if the birth showed Joseph as his father it would indeed be the proof I need, however,I try not to order certificates,in the past when I did so and it was wrong family,it is money spent for nothing.

I think I have 3 or 4 currently I have no use for.$200.oo spent for information that I have no use for.

I'm afraid if you don't get the certificate, you probably won't be able to progress any further back. I think if you order the certificate from the GRO there is a way to say you don't want it unless the father is Joseph.
