The Bird family of Co. Cork are well known in the Funfair industry. Their family Funfair was started by William Bird, Snr who was born in 1908. Despite the fact that his father was a bookmaker by the time William reached the age of twelve he claimed to be earning more than his father.  One of Billy Bird's gimmicks, which proved to be a crowd puller, was the raffling of tea in quarter pound packets at a time when tea was rationed. The tea came from Co. Cork hurlers, the Barry brothers, members of a family who had owned a tea distribution and importing business since 1901.
