Fannon - Alnwick
« on: Wednesday 01 June 16 20:54 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am new to RootsChat and this my first post. I am trying to find out about my late Mother's family. I am from a family of ten children, sadly, most of them are now deceased. There were lots of stories about the family's background, some of them accurate and some inaccurate.

My late Father, James Allan, was born in Linlithgow, but the family was predominantly from Alnwick, Northumberland. My Grandmother married a Peter McEwan from Alnwick. My two youngest Brother's were born in Leicester, but the rest of us were born in Alnwick.
I believe that my Mother, Mary, was born in Alnwick. Her maiden name was Hall (I am told that her Father was called Joe Hall). Her Mother's maiden name was Fannon. My Mother did tell me that her family originated from Ireland.

Is there any help or advice out there please?

Hello and welcome!

Is there help and advice out here? I hope so!

If the year is right, this looks like your mother's birth registration

Births Jun 1920
Hall    Mary                   mother's maiden name Fannon      Alnwick    10b   1094

There are a total of 4 Hall children with this mother's maiden name born in Alnwick between 1920 - 1933; I can't post their names in case any of them is still alive.

I can't see a marriage in Alnwick for a couple with the Hall/Fannon surnames though.

Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

Hello Annie

Thank you for your email. I can't believe that I received a response so quickly. Can you tell me what 10b  1094 means please?

I used this website

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

and the numbers give the reference for the birth registration, which took place in the second 1/4 of 1920 and was registered in volume 10b, page 1094. Should you want to get a copy of a birth, marriage or death certificate, it's much easier if you have these references.

I'm a bit confused about your grandmother who married Peter Mcewan. Was this your maternal or paternal grandmother?

You mention that your father was James Allan - so was Peter McEwan his stepfather? Where does the Allan surname fit in? or was Allan his middle name?

Do you have any idea of your mother's parents' names? There was a marriage between Arthur HALL and Annie Eliza FANNON in Bramley, Yorkshire, in 1910 -- but no children with this combo of surnames registered until the Alnwick births starting in 1920.

(added - sorry, you mention that you think your mother's father was Joe. Do you know her mother's first name?)

I'm seeing a Hall mmn Fannon birth in Alnwick in 1918, which would very much match the suggest name of father Hall.

I have found this trail, which might fit

Q4 1915 - Mary Fannon marries David Connell in Alnwick
11 Sept 1916 - David Connell dies of his wounds, buried Struma Cemetery Greece.
Q4 1917 - Mary Connell marries Edward Hall in Alnwick (vol 10b p281)

Mary's parents were (according to a tree on Ancestry) Joseph Fannon and Winifred (nee Quinn). Wonder if the father and grandfather's names have been confused?
