Thomas Pigott
« on: Saturday 04 June 16 18:45 BST (UK) »
Can you help please?   This is my first post on Roots Chat

I am searching for information about Thomas Pigott.
He was born  about 1839 according to the age he gave on his Marriage Certificate.
He died in 1906 in Stockport.

I am unsure who his parents were.
I cannot find him on a Census until1881.-gives place of Birth as Carlisle.
His first wife was Margaret John-married 1866 by Licence at Pembroke Dock prior to embarkation with his Regiment (and wife) for Simonstown and later Rawalpindi.

I would like to find who his parents were and any Census records prior to 1881.

Thank You for your help

Welcome to Rootschat.

Have you got his marriage certificate as that should give his father's name and occupation?

Hi and welcome to rootschat as Groom said the marriage certificate should give you the fathers name ..I see by the information in the 1881 census he would have been in South Africa in 1871 when his son would have been born .

Thanks for this.

I will send for the marriage Certificate and it will hopefully give his Father's name but he seems to have been born before his parents married and I wondered if his Mother was an Army widow and married again as Carlisle was a Military base.

He enlisted in 1858, which is probably why he can't be found in the 1861 or 1871 census.

Added: It looks as if he was in the Mediterranean in the 1860 and The Cape in the 1870s.

Hi from me too! :)

An immediate problem seems to be no PIGGOT(T)s born in Cumberland.

The only similar births before 1851 were PIGG.  :-\

EDIT: Wait a mo ... there was a William PIGOTT married in 1845.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thanks to All.

I will look into his surname as Pigg and variations on that theme.

His early life and parentage is difficult to establish.

I wonder whether his father was also in the army and whether they are in army barracks or abroad in 1841 and 1851? Seems a bit odd that he enlisted in Norfolk rather than Carlisle.
