Mayne, Maine, Main - Leicestershire
« on: Monday 06 June 16 21:17 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone can help, hitting a bit of a dead end, searching for the name / word "main" through historical documents is proving rather tricky to narrow it to relevance;

Here is the person I'm looking and here's what I know;

Mathew Mayne
Born approx. 1791

Married: Dorothy Tyler in 1818

In an 1841 England and Wales Census we have the following living at

Stamford Street, St Margaret in Bishops Fee, Leicester:

Mathew Main    50
Dorothy Main   40

Mary
William
Richard
Thomas
Mathew
Catherine (Kitty)
George
Louisa

Also staying with them are
William and Sarah Gaylard

I am having extreme difficulty locating Mathews birth records and records of his parents and /or any sibling. any help would be appreciated.

I have a death record for 1843 - BMD Index 1837-1915 Vol 15 Page 70. Hoping someone could tell me which Church this would be.

Thank you kindly in advance.

If you require any further information I will be happy to add it if I know it.

Hi JP

Matthew Mayn was buried 10 Dec 1843 at Leicester St George. His age was given as aged 64 according to my transcript.

Not found anything else of much help yet but I'll keep looking.

Hi
I have found baptisms for 2 of Matthew's & Dorothy's children at St George's Leicester
1836 9 March George Mayn
1839 17 April Louisa Mayn

Have looked at St Margarte's Pr and cannot see a baptism for Matthew.

Baptisms at St George (also supplied by Bunnygirl whilst I was typing):

9 March 1836, George Mayne s/o Matthew, a Labourer, & Dorothy
17 Apr 1839, Louisa Mayne d/o Matthew, a Labourer, & Dorothy

Looking for possible siblings of Matthew, there was a William & Harriett Mayn(e)  having children baptised at St George around the same time, and a possible marriage at St Margaret is William Mayne of Loughborough Parish to Harriet Johnson on 8 Jun 1824.

A John & Sarah Mayne had a son, Samuel, baptised at St Margaret 23 Nov 1823 and were living at Humberstone Gate.  John was a blacksmith.  The same Samuel was buried on 17 Sep 1827 at St George.

John Mayn & Sarah Hill married 15 July 1822 at All Saints, Leicester. He was of that parish, she was of Belgrade Parish.

Another one possibly worth looking at as a sibling is Samuel Mayn who married Mary Duncan by licence on 7 April 1825 at Somerby.  He was 33, a bachelor & a baker.

Thank you again to both for the excellent information

A lot of that info confirms what I have got so I appreciate that, always good to get more confirmation.

As to Matthew's siblings, I found several over mayne, mayn, maine, main's in the area, I just cant find anything to tie them together as siblings or relatives, finding Matthews parents is proving to be rather troublesome.

Thank you so much

Joe

If the burial age is right then he would have been born around 1779 rather than 1791, so this baptism could be a possibility:

9 Mar 1783, Great Bowden, Matthew Maine s/o Richard & Mary.  Born 28 Feb 1783

Also at Great Bowden to Richard & Mary:
23 Feb 1772, Thomas Main
26 Sep 1773, Richard Main - buried 15 Jun 1792 aged 18 (died 13 Jun)
19 Mar 1775, William Main
06 Apr 1777, Mary Maine

All of the names fit with your Matthew's children, so a good possibility.

There is a burial in Great Bowden on 21 Jun 1893 but his age is given as 84, so he would be too young to be your Matthew.

I'm sure I've seen the Main/Maine/Mayne surname connected to Great Bowden on another of my transcripts but I have to pop out for half an hour or so - will check when I get back.

Added: I must have imagined the other records, sorry, but there appear to be Mayne's recorded in Great Bowden as far back as 1569, with the first Richard (Rychard) in 1578.

I cant see Richard & Mary's marriage there but there is a marriage on 29 Nov 1770 at Stonton Wyville between Richard Mayne of Great Bowden & Mary Allen OTP.

Hope this helps.
