Hi John

I'm assuming that you have your grandparents' marriage certificate and that it states that both were widowed.
The certificate should also state her original surname, via the information for her father.

Do you have this certificate  :-\

What surname did Abraham have on the marriage cert, was it just Stanway.

A birth certificate should give mothers married name if applicable and her maiden name.  If she was not married to Simeon at the time of your fathers birth she was obviously trying to include his surname.  Basically in England you can call yourself what you like as long as it is not for fraudulent purposes.

This could be the Joseph Stanway bapt Biddulph 28 Feb 1798 to Mary Stanway single woman.

How odd there's another Sarah Shufflebottom married a Joseph Sherratt / Stanway a lot later.

Rosie, Simeon married her just prior to the birth and looks like after she died (sad).
Dad never spoke of it
