Im glad you think its strange as well. At that time the rest of his family - father and brothers are still employed in the trade of brick/tiles.
If he had been unwell and left his original trade he wouldnt have become a groom as that is quite strenuous work.
Aveley is 5 miles from Grays
The other thing that puzzles me is that his widow did not remarry until 1859 which makes me think he died nearer to that date.

To be respectful she would have waited 2 years but circumstances such as they were often dictated an earlier marriage however, an 1859 remarriage would seem about right for someone dying in 1856.
Maybe he was in Aveley in lodgings when he died & his family were still in Ravenhill waiting for him to arrange accommodation.
Being a groom wasn't anywhere near as strenuous as being a brickmaker.

Thanks Sue, info is same as death cert. Its the only death that vaguely fits. I just need to accept that its him although for me it just does not feel right.

Anna Ella Sadler baptised in Grays September 29th, 1850 to William and Emma, father's occupation tilemaker.

Do you know where Emma's second marriage took place, cannot find it in Grays.
