Evangeline Thornton/Jenkins/Laugharne - inquest papers
« on: Wednesday 08 June 16 23:30 BST (UK) »
Hi

Been off Rootschat for some time.

I have been researching the life of Evangeline Laugharne. I've got to her death on 17th December 1908 at 9 Otley Rd, Shipley West Yorkshire but it is a strange death (fractured skull falling off a ladder whilst whitewashing in the middle of winter). There was an inquest (the very next day but many miles away in Pontefract, which seems rather unusual). How do I get access to the papers from the inquest (I can't see an option on ancestry).

As ever, thank-you for any help  :)

You need to ask the Records Office and they may charge a fee.  You should contact them first to check they have them

Thanks for the reply. Annoyingly the Wakefield Records Office closed on 13th May but the new one doesn't open until 2017!!

Individual Coroners decide what happens to the papers very many of them were destroyed by the coroner, hence there are regional variations in survival. The appropriate county record office, will almost certainly know what is available and where it is. While they are within the definition of public records and open to the public after 75 years many will not have survived those 75 years. Once 15 years old the records can be weeded,' that is destroyed or sampled by the individual coroner concerned. Newspapers usually gave a very full report and is the best bet.
