Starnthorpe - where is it?
« on: Friday 10 June 16 12:35 BST (UK) »
I keep coming upon mentions of Starnthorpe, which I am guessing is somewhere near Sutton on Trent.  However, I can't find it on any map, so I'm a bit confused.  Is is a parish in its own right, or is it a hamlet, or perhaps just a farm?

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Lincolnshire: Beck; Smith
Leicestershire: Goadby; Iliffe;
Warwickshire: Bradbury; Friswell; Gilliver; Beesley

Now that I don't know.

It looks like Starnthorpe when I have seen it written down and I haven't been able to identify anywhere called Stanthorpe either.

V confusing.

Sorry for delay in reply (Power has been down for 3 hours  :o :o :o )

I have had a look on the internet and Starnthorpe looks to be a proper place, one link I found regarding wills mentions:

 "................. Lands in Starnthorpe in the parish of Sutton-upon-Trent, Nottinghamshire, ..."

As yet I can't find it tho' :-\

It is called Stonethorpe in the 1881 census. It appears to consist of the buildings around the railway, as shown on the first link I gave above.

Many thanks for your help with this.  I'll try and locate it on the ground next time I go up there.

If it was Stanthorpe - come visit next time you're in Oz.
It's in Queensland and regularly makes the weather forecast as the coldest place in Queensland.
