My great grandfather Bertrand Fred Clarke was a greengrocer in Nottingham 1901 census but October 2 that year his wife gave birth to his youngest son in Bethnall Green Workhouse stating her husband was a shoemaker. As that was a workhouse trade I am guessing he was there as well. She then went to live with her in-laws with all 3 children but he was never heard of again. Can anyone tell me where to find the workhouse records? I have come to a dead end with him and am fascinated to know how they ended up in Bethnall Green.

Do you have his wife on the 1911 census? What is her marital status - married or widowed?

We can't do look ups for 1911, but I would suggest looking outside of his familiar area, won't help find him in Workhouse though
