Murray sisters from Walton? Hertfordshire
« on: Sunday 12 June 16 01:38 BST (UK) »
In the 1881 census, Jane Murray b. 1822 and her sisters, Mary A. Archer b.1825, and Eleanor E. Murray b.1843 are living together in Bromley, London, Middlesex.  They are ALL listed as being born in WALTON, Hertfordshire...  I would really like to find their birth records but Walton doesn't seem to exist.  Would anyone have an idea what this should be and have access to the corresponding parish records.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am hoping that this is my missing great-great grandmother, Jane.  Thank you.

And in 1891, the same 3 sisters are in Bootle, West Derby, Lancashire
RG12/ Piece 2969 / Folio80 /Pg34
62 Park Street
MA ARCHER 71 (b abt 1820), widow
Jane MURRAY 72, (b abt 1819) unm,
Eleanor MURRAY 47, (b abt 1844) unm,
All: Living On Own Means, and listed as :  b Walton, Hertfordshire

In the 1881 that you have, they were stated respectively as ages: 56 (b abt 1825) , 59 (b abt 1822), 37 (b abt 1843). So a wee bit of a discrepancy there for Mary A and Jane…..but clearly the same women.

Pretty sure their place of Birth is meant to be Watton (Watton-at-Stone). Misheard  - or misread - twice by the Census enumerator?    Pretty sure this following is Mary Ann and Jane in 1851, both as yet unmarried and with their own widowed mother Mary  and two brothers, in the household of mother's father Thomas PEET. They're in St Andrew Herts, which is in the Watton civil area - and the girls have again been transcribed as being born Walton. But the image says Watton, I'm sure of it.

1851: HO107; Piece: 1711; Folio: 374; Page: 45;

Gr-Son: Thomas MURRAY 20, unm, b Aston, Herts,
Gr-Son: James MURRAY 16, unm, Journeyman Chandler, b Hertford, Herts

And the same family in 1841, as in 1851
1841: HO107/ Piece 437/ Book 8/ Pg 1
Wood Hale Park, Watton, Hertfordshire
Thomas PEAT 70, Keeper,
Ann PEAT 40
Mary MURRY 42
Jane MURRY 22
Mary MURRY 20
John MURRY 17,
Caroline MURRY 15
Ellen MURRY 13
Thomas MURRY 10
James MURRY 8

From Family Search:
WATTON AT STONE, HERTS
Father: John MURRAY
Mother: Mary
BAPTISMS:
Jane MURRAY, 13 Sep 1818
Mary Ann MURRAY , 13 Aug 1820
Maria MURRAY, 18 Nov 1822
John MURRAY, 13 May 1824
Caroline MURRAY,  21 Aug 1826
Eleanor MURRAY 11 May 1828
James Walter MURRAY, Apr 1839

You say you're after finding your gt-gt grandmother Jane.  The Jane MURRAY in these census is unmarried  - does that fit with what you know of your Jane?

Cheers

Thank you so much!  Jane Murray is a bit of a mystery.  My great grandfather, John Murray b. 1860ish never mentioned a father, only briefly his mother Jane and 'aunt Ellen' who raised him....  she was older when he was born and I believe single. The only fact we know is that Jane worked for an Oxford professor until he died in 1849. John said he was born in 'Richmond/Chertsey, Surrey' and there is a church record there showing a 'Jane Murray' single woman residing in Hertsfordshire at the time christening her 2 year old son John.  I was thinking that perhaps if this is my Jane she would have gone back to be with family while she had the baby?  I'm grasping at straws but determined to figure this out.
Thank you again for taking the time to send me all this information.

No Jane with them, and no baby John, or Ellen, either - but the following Census 1861 does at least tie up the family in the 1841/1851 to the sisters in 1881/1891, as being the same family!   ;D

RG 9/ Piece 299/ Folio 92/ Pg28
1861 : At 7 Albert Rd, Stepney, Middlesex
Head: Mary MURRAY 65, Dressmaker, b Walton Woodsale, Herts
Son: John MURRAY 34, unm, Coal Merchant, b Hertford, Herts
Dau: Mary A ARCHER 35, wid, Dressmaker, b Walton Woodsale, Herts
Sister: Ann PEET 63, unm, Dressmaker, b Hertford, Herts [Deaf]

"Walton Woodsale,  Hertfordshire"

Seems quite a definite declaration!  But can't find that either?

The 1841 Census does say Wood Hall Park, not Wood Hale as I originally had 'read'.

"Walton Woodsale,  Hertfordshire"
Seems quite a definite declaration!  But can't find that either?

And the same family in 1841, as in 1851
1841: HO107/ Piece 437/ Book 8/ Pg 1
Wood Hall Park, Watton, Hertfordshire
Thomas PEAT 70, Keeper,
Ann PEAT 40
Mary MURRY 42
Jane MURRY 22
Mary MURRY 20
John MURRY 17,
Caroline MURRY 15
Ellen MURRY 13
Thomas MURRY 10
James MURRY 8

Hmmmm.....
Wood Hall - Woodsale
Watton - Walton

Watton Woodhall, gets a lot of hits on google.... that could be it!

Watton Woodhall Manor - maybe Thomas PEET snr was one of the Estate workers there, a Keeper as he is described in 1841.  Thomas being the father of Mary PEET who went on the marry John MURRAY?

Cheers
