How to find ship descriptions
« on: Monday 13 June 16 06:59 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find a description of the convict ship Fairlie that arrived in Tasmania 1852.
I know its a barque and that is my limit.
There probably is no picture of it so I'd like to draw one. I'd like to know how many sails it had on each mast. I presume being a barque it would have four and aft masts.
Is there a sister ship that might be used as a basis. Even if I could find out the makers I might find something useful. The Fairlie was built in Calcutta.
I just cannot seem to find much about the ship. There are also so many versions of barques I would like to at least get something close. Also I definitely wouldn't know a barque from a schooner so if someone could please assist it would make me really really happy.
Thank you
Evelyn

From a few of the details in the article it seems to be the same ship. She couldn't have been wrecked in 1840 as she sailed from England to Van Diemen's Land in 1852. The records of her arriving in Hobart states the owners name who is mentioned in the description for the stamp. Interesting reading. Thank you for drawing my attention to it.
Cheers
Evelyn

Try an email to  NMM Greenwich.
They may be able to help

Main difference between Barque and a Schooner circa 1852. Barques had 3 masts schooners only 2.
