Information on Isabella Bramham (nee Lee)
« on: Thursday 16 June 16 00:40 BST (UK) »
My ancestor, Isabella Bramham (nee Lee) was born in 1846 in Edinburgh, Scotland. (England Census 1861, 1871 & 1881)

She died in 1882 in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England.

She married Robert Bramham in 1870/71, in Brotherton, Yorkshire.

Her father, according to the marriage record, was James Tod. This is inconsistent with the surname 'Lee'. The reason for the different surname is not clear. Perhaps she was called 'Isabella Tod' at one point?

Her first record in England was in the Census of 1861, aged 15 years. She seemed to be working as a servant for the Hurst/Hursh family in Holy Trinity (near Hull, Yorkshire).

I have been interested in tracing the 'Lee/Tod' line in Scotland. However, since I have no record of Isabella Lee/Tod's birth, my attempt have been somewhat fruitless.
If anybody could help me in any way, that would be most helpful!!
Cheers!!!!
England: Bramham, Harris, Watson, Harrison, Laycock, Anderson, Douglas
Scotland: McDonald, Lee, Cruickshanks
Ireland: Conway, Kelly

I'm not convinced the surname is Tod.  It looks more like Ford to me

The full marriage cert is on Ancestry.  There is a possibility it says James decd (deceased)

I know the transcription is Tod but that is just what it looks like to the transcriber - does not mean it's correct.  James occupation is farmer

It should be noted though, that 'Tod' is a common name in Scotland. That is part of the reason I'm struggling to find any ancestors.

I think the idea that it stands for 'Deceased' is unlikely. How can he be a Farmer if he's dead?

The surname 'Ford' in Scotland is usually of Irish origin. Am I correct?

Any info. available as to the birth of Isabella Lee/Tod/Ford??

It is not uncommon for a deceased fathers occupation to be shown on a marriage cert. You will find a deceased male's occupation on his death cert - even though he's dead

For what it is worth, I think Tod is the correct transcription.

The 1861 census you have found shows her as 15 born Leith.

Have you looked at the 1851 Scotland census entry in Leith South for Isabella Tod, 5, granddaughter of James and Isabella Lees?
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Cheers! I will certainly look into this one! The Scottish census records I've found don't seem to show an individual's relatives/co-occupants though...
