Ainsleys in Alnwick
« on: Thursday 16 June 16 03:27 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the death of Thomas Ainsley who was married to Ann Mattison in 1811. I have found a grave and death notice for a Thomas Ainsley born in 1791 who died in 1873 and was a tailor which fits the profile for my Thomas, but his wife Ann died in 1842. The 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census show a Thomas and Ann Ainsley still living in Alnwick and appear to be my family. I can only find one Thomas Ainsley who died in Alnwick and he seems to be the one above. An Ann Ainsley died in 1872.
I am wondering if my Thomas remarried to another Ann or are these just very common names in the area?
My Thomas and Ann had sons called Lauchlin, Thomas and William and I have the documentation for this.
Thanks in anticipation, Margaret

Hello Margaret,
There is a marriage June Q Alnwick 25 p 219 where Thomas Ainsley and an Ann Charlton are on the same page. This does not necessarily mean they married each other but is worth investigating.

The marriages do not seem to be available on familysearch BT's but if you live near a family history centre or the Northumberland County record office you could try viewing the registers that way. This assumes they married in the parish church.

If they married elsewhere, for example in the register office, then it would be easier to get hold of the marriage certificate. You can order with the proviso that Thomas is married to Ann  - email or phone the registrar - they may charge more than the GRO fee. Or Order through the GRO

(There is an Ann Charlton in Alnwick in 1841 but I do not see her there in 1851)

This assumes they married in the parish church.

And also that they married in Alnwick itself. It was a large Registration District. http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/alnwick.html

The marriages do not seem to be available on familysearch BT's

Sadly there are very few marriages on the BT's post 1837 (i.e. after Civil Registration began).

I notice the 1841 Ann is "born in County" (North'd)
Subsequent censuses has her born Durham. So looks like from 1851 on it's a different Ann.

But Haydon Bridge (1851/61 census) is in Northumberland. Only the 1871 census birthplace (Chester -le-Street )is in Co. Durham - an error or did he marry a third Ann???

Surely the 1851 census shows Haydon Bridge Northumberland  :-\

An Ann Ainsley died in 1872.

Thomas and Ann were living in Clayport in 1871.

There is this death notice in the Alnwick Mercury, 4th May 1872

In this town at Clayport Street on the 19th Ult., aged 79, Ann wife of Mr Thomas Ainsley.

Where exactly did you find the information that his wife died in 1842?
