Looking for any information on this family..
I can pick up  James Johnstone in 1859 , Schnapper Point, Mornington, Australia when he Married Ann(ie) Irons sometimes called Hirons, the family then came to New Zealand in 1864 with the Waikato Militia.
James also used James Lovett Johnstone or James McGhurr? Johnstone

James has his birth place on Marriage Certificate as Romsey, Hampshire and on his Death Certificate Kirkcaldy, Scotland.
He names his parents as Joseph Young Johnstone and always has his mother as Margaret nee Lovett
I have been unable to track James life before 1859 and would appreciate any help. James was known in NZ as being untruthful and talk of a remittance man...
thank you
Sue

Found this 1851 census which may be the family:
High St. Kirkaldy:
Joseph Johnstone  50 b. Ireland occ. sail cloth weaver.
Margt Johnstone  50 b. Abbotshall, Fife
Mariann Johnstone  28 b. Bengal.
Joseph Johnston  20 b. Abbotshall Fife. occ. none (pauper)
Isabella Johnstone  13 b. Lovington, Linlithgowshire
Margt Johnstone  11 b. Kirkaldy, Fife
No James.

& again in 61 same address:
Joseph Johnston  60
Margaret Johnston  59
Mary Ann Johnston  38
Margaret Johnston  20
Margaret Marshall  4 G/dau.
No James.

1871:
Kirkcaldy; ED: 25; Page: 21; Line: 19; Roll: CSSCT1871_76

G/dau. Margt. Marshall is the dau. of Isabella who married James Marshall Jan 14 1856 Dunfermline.
ScotlandsPeople has their marriage cert. This will tell you her mother's maiden name which you may want to confirm as I can't find a birth or marriage for a Margaret Lovett.

Is the Ancestry tree with his mariner's papers yours?
Edit:
Realised I had some free credits so had a look at Isabella's marriage.
Her mother is listed as Margaret Johnston nee Young.

Found this birth;
Margaret Young
Birth:
10 Aug 1800
Baptism:
17 Aug 1800
Abbotshall,Fife,Scotland

Father:
James Young
Mother:
Margaret Johnston

There is a Banns of marriage in Abbotshall in 1821 between a Margaret Young & Joseph Jackson.
So did Joseph Jackson change his name to Johnston or are they a different couple?
Also her father publicly objected, not that it helps.

To add to your pletiful info there Jim...Margaret Johnson/Young looks to have died in Kircaldy in 1869. Likely entry for Joseph also in Kircaldy in 1873.

Sue, has any one checked these deaths to see what they say in respect of Margaret and Joseph's parents? Joseph's harder with the Irish birth, but possibly some info to be found with confirmation of Margaret's parents.

Given the Bengal birth place for daughter Mary Ann and also son James' location, wondered whether Joseph may have been in the army in his early days?

Someone has included parents' names for Joseph and Margaret here

www.rootschat.com/links/01htk/

Margaret's details match what Jim has found. Not clear on the source of the info from the FS details.

Thank you for all the above comments, I live in New Zealand and sorry I have posted in several places.
I have looked at the Kirkcaldy information and will do so again, so much of this information fits my James other than he always mentioned his mother as Margaret Lovett, but on James Death Certrticiate he lists his fathers name as Joseph Young Johnstone?? his son was the informant. so who knows.
On this Joseph Johnstone's Snr Death Certificate, died Kirkcaldy) his Father is John and his mother Mary Ann Cox (Ireland).
It is very hard to find proof as there is such a big gap till our James at some stage came to Australia and married in 1859.
The Ancestry Tree with the Merchant Navy material is not my Tree but I have looked at the documents.
Joseph jnr was deaf and dumb and was buried on his Grandfather James Young farm property.
Below is the information in Australia re James that I listed on the Beginners site in reply

James age   on His Marriage Certificate - Australia was 27 years, married July 1859, James occupation Quarryman, birth Romsey Hants England..
Father occupation - Weaver
```````
James age on Death Certificate - New Zealand died November 1912 age 86 yrs
hence the birth difference! Occupation Retired... Birth place  Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland.
Father Provost.
Children
Joseph Davey (twin) brother William died at 2 months. born December 1859 AUstralia, James listed as a Quarryman... aged 27 years, birth place London.
James born 1861  Australia , Father James occupation Quarryman age 29 Romsey Hants
John Archibald born 1863 Australia occupation Quarryman, age 30, birth place,  Hampshire
Plus another5 born in New Zealand after 1964..
Another interesting item with my James in New Zealand and the Joseph Jphnstone family in Kirkcaldy is that my James named his children with all the same names, so many queries!!!!
Would be good to find the 1841 census entry for the family we have been discussing . I am struggling with finding it so far...  We need it to confirm the details we have and see in the list hopefully a James as a possible son.
